WesBell UL1028 Wire has stranded tinned copper strands and a 600 volt PVC insulation. UL1028 is also approved to CSA standards and for 105°C. It passes a UL VW-1 flame test and it is most commonly used as appliance wire. The copper comes in two different possibilities, stranded and solid. Stranded copper is more flexible and bends easily around corners while solid copper holds its form when bent, either of which can be beneficial to certain applications.

UL 1028 Construction

Hook up wire comes in many variations that are flexible and nonflexible, high and low voltage, high and low temperature, solder iron resistant, and much more. This wire is a single conductor designed with bare copper strands and a tin coating. The tin coating helps adhere to solder when attaching it to the application. There is a PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) insulation that covers and protects the copper from the most common environment it lives; electronics and appliances.

Heat isn’t a main concern of this type of hook up wire because it’s an added expense during the design and manufacturing processes. UL1028 reaches 105°C and 600 volts according to the UL (Underwriter’s Laboratories) tests and approvals. Hook up wire insulation (.030” insulation thickness) is the most important part of the construction process because it needs to resist temperatures as it states it will. If the application requires additional protection there will be another type of wire designated for that application, most likely with a higher price tag.

UL 1028 Approvals

This single conductor hook up wire is RoHS compliant, approved as UL1028, CSA approved, rated for temperatures as high as 105°C and voltages as high as 600 Volts, and passes a VW-1 flame test. The UL1028 stamp of approval assures that the wire has been tested and approved by UL for all of the tests under those numbers. If you’re looking for a particular approval that’s not listed for this wire there will be another type of hook up wire that probably has it. UL1028 is one of the most basic types of hook up wire with the least amount of approvals, and is therefore, one of the most affordable as well. As the approvals, temperatures and voltages increase the price will increase with it.

UL 1028 Applications

The applications are listed based on the approvals which are maximum levels of voltage, temperature, heat and environment. For example, 1028 approved wire cannot be used in applications that require more than 600 volts, 105°C, or outdoors. It’s most commonly used in electronics and appliances below these specified conditions. If the application is going to be exposed to high heat during a portion of its life then a different insulation would be required to avoid melted insulation and exposed copper strands.

Copper wire is used to conduct electricity and is needed for applications that require electricity to travel from A to B. As the wire travels from A to B heat, water and voltage can disrupt the copper or even ruin it completely, and disconnect the electrical current. To avoid these things from happening, insulation is used to protect the wire. Each application requires a special protection, as you can imagine wire used indoors would need far less protection than wire used outdoors, which also creates a big price difference.   

UL 1028 Manufacturers

Several manufacturers design and make UL 1028 wire in bare copper, tinned copper and various colors. You shouldn’t assume that all distributors and manufactures have the same approvals just because they call it 1028 wire. Some manufacturers make boat loads of the color white, then dye it when colors are requested, while some manufacturers have varying outer diameters.
