WesBell Speaker wire has one bare copper side and one tinned copper side to clearly designate the difference between each side. The PVC insulation is clear and the conductors are bonded together so that they can peel back during installations. Speaker wire is commonly used to wire digital audio and stereo speaker systems.
Speaker Wire Construction
Also known as zip cord, this particular cable has two bonded wires running horizontally with the insulation molded together. It begins with bare copper strands, one side remains bare and one side includes a tin coating to distinguish it from the bare side. Both conductors are covered with clear PVC insulation and bonded at the side. The clear insulation shows one tinned copper side and one bare copper side to identify them at the opposite end of the application.
Speaker Wire Approvals
WesBell’s speaker wire use UL and RoHS approved conductors. UL provides different tests and approvals based on each UL style. If you need more voltage or a higher temperature rating you should ask our sales staff to quote it for you. There will be a different UL style to match the different voltage level, such as UL1007 at 300 volts or UL1015 is approved for 600 volts. This speaker wire is one of the most basic in the industry, which means it’s the cheapest as well. It’s not designed in a cheap way, it just doesn’t have added bells and whistles that some applications require at an added cost.
Speaker Wire Applications
Generally, they are used in applications that do not require the cable to block EMI (Electrical Magnetic Interference), such as digital audio, hi-fi and stereo speaker wire, jukeboxes and home theater, but not for in-wall use. The same installations and applications might also need to block EMI depending on the other cables located in the general area, but the installer or electrician should have that information.
Speaker wire is simply considered a group of two “hook up wires” in a neat and organized fashion. Instead of installing 2 individual wires that look slightly messy, you can use zip cord or speaker wire to create a much neater installation of wires.
Speaker Wire Manufacturers
Several manufacturers make speaker wire and unshielded cables. Both the conductors and jacket and made with PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) so it’s easy for the manufacturers to make both hook up wire and PVC cables. General Cable, Quabbin Wire, Comtran and Cable Technology are a few manufacturers that WesBell uses as approved vendors. Each manufacturer designs their cables slightly different, so if you have a tight outer diameter tolerance, you should request the cable’s data sheet of the exact manufacturer that you plan to buy.
Speaker Wire Services
WesBell is an ISO 9001 certified company that will also cut your wire to length, strip the insulation from each conductor to a specified length and dip each conductor (copper) into tin. Dipping the conductors into tin will avoid the individual strands from fraying during transit and also increase the connection process when the user solders each wire to their application. Furthermore, WesBell can crimp terminals (Molex, AMP, JST, etc.) to the ends of each conductors and insert them into a plastic house. We provide all of the added services needed, we supply the tooling and applicators, and we hold a release (package size) on the shelf for immediate shipment, when requested.
