WesBell SOOW Cable (Service Oil Oil Water) has oil resistant conductors and jacket along with a water resistant (not submersible) jacket. SJOOW cable is rated for 300 volts while SOOW is rated for 600 volts. Multiconductor portable cord or service cord is used for portable applications that require power. You should use SOOW cable similar to an extension cord in order to provide current to power tools and equipment.
SOOW Cable Construction
This 600 volt portable cable’s construction starts with 30 AWG bare copper strands woven together for flexibility. There is an EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) insulation covering the copper to create one of the conductors. SOOW cables can have either 2, 3, 4, 5, 6+ total conductors before the jacket covers them. Finally, a CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene) rubber jacket covers the conductors and resists environmental conditions. You might find some filler between the conductors as well which has nothing to do with the cable other than to keep it as round as possible.
The copper strands are increased for each AWG size offered. For example, SOOW 18/3 has 3 conductors of 18 AWG copper. This gauge size is comprised of 16 strands of 30 AWG copper. If it was a single strand of 18 AWG copper instead it would be much less flexible, and it would hold its form when bent. SOOW 14/4 has 4 conductors of 14 AWG wire. Each 14 AWG wire has 41 strands of 30 AWG copper, again, to keep the flexibility.
SOOW Cable Approvals
Some of the approvals for SOOW are included in the acronym (Oil Oil Water resistant). Aside from the descriptive features, UL, CSA and MSHA approve this cable and it is RoHS complaint. It has good tensile strength, aging and elongation characteristics. It has high flexibility and abrasion resistance, and it can withstand the impact of the ozone and sunlight. All of these approvals lead into the applications which are indoor and outdoor where flexible portable power supply is needed under 600 volts and under 90°C.
SOOW Cable Applications
Generally, SOOW is used for portable tools and equipment, portable appliances, small motors and associated machinery. It’s used to build 600 volt extension cords and extension cords supply power to all sorts of tools, equipment, electronics, etc. The cable is flexible so that it can be coiled and stored away. It can also be easily uncoiled and wrapped around corners, used outdoors, in garages and shops, etc. Construction sites used SOOW portable cords cables to power tools, saws, drills and small equipment on the site.
SOOW Cable Manufacturers
Several manufacturers make SOOW (600 Volts) and SJOOW (300 Volts) cables. It is such a common cable to design and manufacture that many companies have their own brand name attached to the cable for marketing purposes. General Cable uses Carolprene® and Southwire uses Royal®. The brand name might help them repeat sales to the same customers if they like the product.
SOOW Cable Pig Tails
WesBell is an ISO 9001 certified company that constantly changes, alters and modifies their processes to improve each day. We will cut your SOOW cable to length, remove the outer jacket exactly as requested, and strip the ends of each conductor, so that you can use the cable when you receive it. We have the tools in place to get the job done quickly, efficiently, and accurately or we’ll accept the return of product and fix the problem. As you’re placing your order the total price at the bottom of the page will differentiate between products and services, so you’ll see exactly what we charge to cut the ends for you.
