Type W Multiconductor
WesBell Type W Cable is an industrial size SOOW cable or industrial size extension cord. It powers large generators and equipment on construction sites that do not yet have a permanent power supply. Type W cable is rated for 2000 volts and it has a dual layered jacket that withstands severe outdoor conditions and damage such as being run over by equipment. The cable core is bound for superior flexibility and toughness. There is a green conductor but no additional ground wires included.
Type W Multiconductor Cable Construction
The copper strands in Type W cables are bare copper and there are two different layers of insulation covering the copper strands for added protection and voltage. The 30 AWG bare copper strands are finely woven together into the different gauge sizes available. Anywhere from 8 AWG to 500 MCM, the amount of copper strands increases as the size of the cable increases, however the size of the strands remain 30 AWG throughout.
The first layer of insulation is called Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber (EPDM) which is over the copper conductors, and the second layer is called Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) which covers all of the conductors. General Cable uses a special CPE blend called Super Vu-Tron®. Both insulation layers together rate this cable for up to 2000 volts in portable power supply applications. The insulation feels like rubber in your hands, so it’s very flexible as a single conductor portable cord product.
Type W Multiconductor Cable Approvals
Type W cables need to be further approved due to the severity of applications they end up in. General Cable uses their branded Super Vu-Tron® mark of approval that no other manufacturer can use. However, the standard approvals for Type W are RoHS, UL, CSA, MSHA, 90°C, 2000 Volts, and resistant to sunlight, acids, alkalies, heat and flame. It also has excellent impact and abrasion resistance. It’s also approved as RHH/RHW for 600 volt applications, however Type W is known in the industry as a 2000 volt multiconductor cable due to the UL Type W recognition.
Type W Multiconductor Cable Applications
Type W multiconductor portable cord is a step above SJOOW cable and SOOW cable because it is approved for higher voltage and more severe environmental conditions. For example, they are used outdoors where power is not permanently supplied such as an portable power systems, entertainment industry (theater, night clubs, television, motion pictures, mobile communication vans, spotlights and sounds systems), to supply power through generators.
SJOOW and SOOW cables are used at events, fairs and concerts, but Type W cables are used in industrial settings where more current is used to power large equipment and generators.
Type W Multiconductor Cable Manufacturers
Several manufacturers make this 2000 volt cable but all design it in their own way. For example, specification sheets will vary in weight, outer diameter, total approvals and types of dual insulation. General Cable is the only manufacturer that can make Super Vu-Tron® cables. Southwire makes their 8 AWG with 168 strands of 30 AWG copper while General Cable makes their 8 AWG with 133 strands of 30 AWG copper. General Cable offers color upon request (minimum order) while most other manufacturers do not. Be sure to read the specification sheet of the manufacturer that you’re buying because it will absolutely make a difference depending on what exactly you’re looking for in your installation and application.
